New EAN Calculator: Easier Nitrox Planning, Better Learning

Why we built this EAN Calculator

Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN) is a powerful option for recreational diving, especially on shallow to moderate profiles where it can extend no-decompression limits. But getting the most benefit from Nitrox requires more than a tank label. It requires understanding oxygen percentage, partial pressure of oxygen (PPO2), maximum operating depth (MOD), depth limits, and accumulated oxygen exposure.

Designed as a learning tool, not just a utility

Our new EAN Calculator at ean.millibar.io is built to help divers, instructors, and dive centers visualize those relationships. Instead of only returning a number, the tool explains how PPO2 changes with depth, how MOD is calculated, and why exposure tracking matters for repeated dives or extended bottom times. We want users to leave with both the answer and the understanding.

Practical tips included

The calculator highlights common planning norms: choosing a working PPO2 (for example 1.4 atm for sport dives), understanding the higher limits sometimes used for decompression, and how to adjust oxygen fraction to meet a target MOD. It also flags oxygen exposure considerations such as CNS oxygen percentage and accumulated OTUs so divers can plan multiple dives in a day with safety and conservatism in mind.

How this fits into modern dive training

Digital tools are changing how we teach and plan dives. Visualization helps learners build mental models faster, instructors can demonstrate scenarios on the fly, and operators can standardize safer planning habits across teams. At Millibar, we see tools like this as part of a broader DiveTech ecosystem that supports education, clear decision-making, and consistent safety practices across the industry.

Who should use it

Divers curious about Nitrox, instructors teaching nitrox courses, shop owners writing procedures, and dive professionals reviewing operational limits will all find value in the calculator. It is intentionally transparent so you can trace how each output was derived and discuss choices with students and colleagues.

Please try the tool at ean.millibar.io and tell us what you think. Your feedback will help us refine features and expand how our DiveTech platform supports the community. Comment below, send suggestions, or reach out if you want a demo or integration for your center.
